The first evidence of Greek musical genius, the union of song and poetry, was soon joined by two other manifestations. One, pure instrumental music, exerted considerable influence on the nome and melic poetry; the other, choric dance and choric singing, by placing several persons in the role of the nome narrator, relieved the monotony of recitation.

The known historical facts seem to cast doubt on the importance of instrumental music in the first historical phase of Greek civilization. The piper first appeared in a competition about 606, and the first lyre contestant is said to have played in 586. These dates are relatively late, considering the wide dissemination and practice of vocal music in the preceding periods. There are, however, definite signs which indicate the existence and great influence of instrumental music upon the development of lyric poetry, especially that variety which is based on strophic construction.
